Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for human rights in Afghanistan, said in a post on X on Monday he has traveled to the region ahead of next week&s UN Human Rights Council meeting.Bennet is currently in Qatar, after a visit to Turkey.He noted in his message that the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council will convene next week.
He also said that during his time in Turkey, he met with experts and government representatives to discuss key issues.He added that his current visit to Qatar focuses primarily on assessing the human rights situation in Afghanistan.In a post on X on Monday, Bennett said: &In Doha I had a constructive conversation with Professor Barakat Sultan on how to effectively support the people of Afghanistan, the current human rights situation, and possible paths forward.&Bennett has in the past sharply criticized the Islamic Emirate for its treatment of women and girls.In response, the Islamic Emirate recently barred Bennett from entering Afghanistan, a decision that sparked widespread criticism.Responding to the ban at the time, the IEA&s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Islamic Emirate did not trust him and said Bennett was exaggerating &small issues&.
